How to upgrade Tivoli Storage Manager Server from TSM 6.1 to TSM 6.3 - Video Tutorial

As part of a migration plan from Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Version 6.1 or 6.2 to TSM Version 6.3 or 6.4, TSM clients and servers can be upgraded at different times. This configuration is supported as long as the older version is supported.

Tips for Upgrading from Version 6.1 or Version 6.2 to Version 6.3 or 6.4:

To help prevent disruption to your backup and archive activities during the migration, follow these guidelines:
  • A TSM V6.1 or 6.2 client can perform backup, restore, archive, retrieve, and query functions to a TSM V6.3 server.
  • A TSM V6.3 or 6.4 client can perform backup, restore, archive, retrieve, and query functions to a TSM 6.1, 6.2, or 6.3 server.
  • If you back up or archive data from a TSM V6.1, 6.2, or 6.3 client to a TSM server, you can restore or retrieve that data using a TSM V6.3 or V6.4 client.
  • If you back up or archive data from a TSM V6.3 client, you cannot restore or retrieve that data using a TSM V6.2 or earlier client.
  • If you backup or archive data from a TSM V6.4 client, you cannot restore or retrieve that data using a TSM V6.3 or earlier client.
  • All V6.3 and 6.4 administrative clients can administer TSM 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3 servers

NAS backups performed on a TSM V6.3 server using the BACKUP NODE server command can only be restored using the RESTORE NODE server command or a TSM V6.3 or 6.4 client.

Note: the TSM server is shipped at the V6.3.3 level with TSM 6.4

Tips for Upgrading from Version 5.5 or Version 6.1 to Version 6.2 :

As part of the migration plan from Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Version 5.5 or 6.1 to TSM Version 6.2:

TSM clients and servers can be upgraded at different times. This configuration is supported as long as the older version is supported. To help prevent disruption to your backup and archive activities during the migration, follow these guidelines:
  • TSM 5.5 and 6.1 clients can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to a TSM 6.2 server.
  • A TSM 6.2 client can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to TSM 5.5 and 6.1 servers.
  • If you back up or archive data from a TSM 5.5 or 6.1 client to a supported TSM server, you can restore or retrieve that data using a TSM 6.2 client.
  • If you backup or archive data from a TSM 6.2 client, you cannot restore or retrieve that data using a TSM 6.1 or earlier client.
  • TSM 5.5 and 6.1 Space Management (UNIX HSM) clients can perform migrate and recall functions to a TSM 6.2 server.
  • A TSM UNIX HSM 6.2 client can perform migrate and recall functions to TSM 5.5 and 6.1 servers.
  • If you migrate data from a TSM 5.5 or 6.1 UNIX HSM client to a supported TSM server, you can recall that data using a TSM 6.2 UNIX HSM client.
  • If you migrate data from a TSM 6.2 UNIX HSM client, you cannot recall that data using a TSM 6.1 or earlier UNIX HSM client.
  • All administrative clients can administer TSM 5.5, 6.1, and 6.2 servers
NAS backups performed on a TSM 6.2 server using the BACKUP NODE server command can only be restored using the RESTORE NODE server command or a TSM 6.2 client.

Tips for Upgrading from Version 5.5 to Version 6.1:

As part of a migration plan from Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Version 5.5 to Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Version 6.1, TSM clients and servers can be upgraded at different times. This configuration is supported as long as the older version is supported.

To help prevent disruption to your backup and archive activities during the migration, follow these guidelines:If you back up or archive data from a TSM 5.4 or 5.5 client to a TSM supported server, you can restore or retrieve that data using a TSM 6.1 client, except for 5.4 Windows system state data.
  • If you back up or archive data from a TSM 6.1 client, you cannot restore or retrieve that data using a TSM 5.5 or earlier client.
  • If you migrate data using a TSM 5.4 or 5.5 Space Management (UNIX HSM) client to a TSM supported server, you can recall that data using a TSM 6.1 UNIX HSM client.
  • If you migrate data using a TSM 6.1 UNIX HSM client to a TSM supported server, you cannot recall that data using a TSM 5.5 or earlier client.
  • NAS backups performed on a TSM 6.1 server using the server's BACKUP NODE command can only be restored using the server's RESTORE NODE command or a TSM 6.1 client.
  • A TSM 5.5 client can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to a TSM 6.1 server.
  • A TSM 6.1 client can perform backup, restore, archive, and retrieve functions to a TSM 5.5 server.
  • A TSM 5.5 UNIX HSM client can perform migrate and recall functions to a TSM 6.1 server.
  • A TSM 6.1 UNIX HSM client can perform migrate and recall functions to a TSM 5.5 server.
  • All administrative clients can administer TSM Version 5.5 and Version 6.1 servers.
For the 6.1 AIX client, there is both a 32-bit package and a 64-bit package. If you have a 64-bit system and you do not use Space Management (HSM), upgrade to the 64-bit backup-archive client from your 32-bit client.

This below video demonstrates how to upgrade any version of TSM 6 to TSM 6.3.4. It shows the upgrade process for the TSM Server. TSM 6.3.4 is the foundation for the new TSM Operations Center. The process is simple and takes about one hour in production environment, depending on the available resources.

Taking the first steps after upgrade

Verify that the server was upgraded successfully and can operate normally. The verification steps include starting the server, registering licenses, and backing up the database. Also, configure available server options.

Complete the tasks that are described in the IBM infocenter.
After you upgrade the server to V6.3.3 or later, you can authenticate passwords with the LDAP directory server, or authenticate passwords with the IBM® Tivoli Storage Manager server. Passwords that are authenticated with the LDAP directory server can provide enhanced system security.
