As the physical tape volumes mounts number of times on the tape drives there is a chance of occurrence of errors in tape volumes down the line. This situation may lead to write-errors and read-errors on tape volumes when they are mounted next time. Having these errors may lead to incomplete client backup or restoration.
Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) has a feature called MOVE DATA command where you can move data from one tape volume to another tape volume. You can move files from a primary storage pool volume only to volumes in the same or a different primary storage pool. You can move files from a copy storage pool volume only to volumes in the same copy storage pool. You can move files from an active-data pool volume only to volumes in the same active-data pool.

Volumes in copy-storage pools and active-data pools might be set to an access mode of offsite, making them ineligible to be mounted. During processing of the MOVE DATA command, valid files on off-site volumes are copied from the original files in the primary-storage pools. In this way, valid files on off-site volumes are copied without having to mount these volumes. These new copies of the files are written to another volume in the copy-storage pool or active-data pool.
move data <volumename> <stgpoolname>
volume_name (Required)
Specifies the storage pool volume from which to move files.
STGpool
Specifies the primary storage pool to which you want to move files (the target storage pool). This parameter is optional and applies only to moving data from primary storage pool volumes. If you do not specify a value for this parameter, files are moved to other volumes
within the same storage pool.

Moving data from offsite volumes
You can also move data from off-site volumes without bringing the volumes on-site. Processing of the MOVE DATA command for volumes in copy -storage pools and active-data pools is similar to that of primary-storage pools, with the following exceptions:Also Read: What is Offsite Reclamation ?

When you move files from a volume marked as off-site, the server performs the following actions:
- Determines which files are still active on the volume from which you are moving data.
- Obtains these active files from a primary-storage pool or from another copy-storage pool or active-data pool.
- Copies the files to one or more volumes in the destination copy-storage pool or active-data pool.
- Processing of the MOVE DATA command for primary-storage pool volumes does not affect copy-storage pool or active-data pool files.
